Improve Community Health by Strengthening Social Connections

February 17 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Research shows that isolation accounts for more than $6.7 billion in Medicare spending and can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and stroke. Conversely, strong social networks can increase a person’s chance of survival by 50%. During this webinar, we will share strategies to create positive change that promotes social connection, health, and equity to help attendees:

Understand the evidence and the critical distinction between loneliness and social isolation and their tangible impacts on community health.

Identify systemic causes and discover why isolation is often a result of community design and systemic injustice rather than individual choice.

Learn how transformative narratives can strengthen social connections.

A one-hour interactive discussion will be hosted immediately after the webinar. Save time on your calendar to join peers and practitioners across the country to share your own experiences and strategies on this topic.

The webinar will include highlights from one of Healthy Places by Design’s cornerstone reports, Socially Connected Communities: Solutions for Social Isolation. This report outlines five recommendations for integrating social connection into community infrastructure and culture through public spaces, transportation and housing systems, community-led solutions, and community norms.
