Asha Scielzo is a mission-driven executive at the intersection of health care, law and education. With 25+ years of industry experience gained through a combination of big law practice and academia, she is a nationally recognized expert in health care transactional and regulatory matters. Asha is particularly adept at analyzing and distilling complex legal issues into operational takeaways for effective compliance and governance.
As the Director of the Health Law and Policy Program at American University Washington College of Law, she leads all JD, LLM, and Master of Legal Studies health law initiatives. In addition to her administrative role, she brings the practice of health law to the classroom teaching experiential courses on health care fraud and abuse, compliance, corporate governance, digital health, and health care business transactions. With a passion for advancing health equity, Asha studies industry trends and challenges and the role of law and policy in promoting access to quality health care. She is passionate about fostering the next generation of health care changemakers and enthusiastically mentors early career professionals across the nation.
Asha is a dedicated nonprofit leader and Past President of the American Health Law Association, the nation’s largest, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) educational organization devoted to legal issues in the health care field. She also serves on the Boards of Directors of the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics, Tenor Health Foundation, and Horizons of Greater Washington; on the Executive Committee of the South Asian Bar Association of North America and the Section on Law, Medicine & Health Care of The Association of American Law Schools; and on the FDLI Forward Committee of the Food and Drug Law Institute.
Prior to attending law school, Asha worked as a health care strategy analyst for the Advisory Board Company in Washington, D.C. With a background in science, she co-authored several articles published in distinguished clinical journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Associationand Critical Care Medicine. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A. 1995) and Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., 1999, cum laude).
What drives you to work on addressing social isolation & loneliness and fostering social connection?
Social connection plays a crucial role in health and wellbeing. I am eager to dedicate my health law and policy expertise to combatting social isolation and loneliness, which are significant public health risks. With intentional and collaborative effort, we can catalyze a national movement, inspire change, and advance health for all.
