Social connection remains a priority on the global health agenda for a second consecutive World Health Assembly (WHA). At the 79th WHA in Geneva, taking place from 18–23 May 2026, the WHO Director-General will report on the outcomes of the Commission on Social Connection. Member States will also reflect on next steps for coordinated action, including ways to strengthen engagement beyond the health sector.
This follows the adoption of WHA Resolution 78.9 last year – the first time all 194 Member States recognised social connection as a global public health priority, elevating its political importance and strengthening WHO’s mandate to support coordinated action across countries and sectors.
Just three years ago, social connection had never been discussed at WHA. Now, governments will be discussing the issue two years in a row – a clear sign of political commitment and growing momentum to translate commitment into action.
Tune in to this year’s WHA proceedings online to listen to governments discuss the Commission’s achievements and the way forward.
